Madden aficionado Travis Kelce reflects on the Alex Smith trade and wishes he would’ve played better for the quarterback.

Travis Kelce has been a force to be reckoned with in the NFL ever since he was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs. He’s a premier tight end and only getting better with each year that passes. He’s not playing in the Super Bowl this year, but Kelce was in Minneapolis to soak in the scenery, draw some inspiration and motivation as a player, as well as promote some Madden fun.

Although the Chiefs have been on the up and up in recent years and flirted with playoff glory, this year ended in a devastating loss to the Tennessee Titans during the Wild Card round and Kelce had exited the game early due to a concussion.

On top of that, Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith will be traded to the Washington Redskins at the start of the new league year in March. Kelce reiterated he is looking forward to next season, growing as a team with Patrick Mahomes in the pocket and finding new ways to win games each week.

“As a team we have to be able to take what is given to us and keep rolling,” Kelce said about the team’s new dynamic without Smith next season.

Kelce, who has a close relationship with Smith, admitted it’s an awkward situation.

“To be honest, I wish I was a better player and I was there for Alex more on the field now that it’s looking like he’s going to be in Washington next year,” Kelce said.

In addition to supporting his brother Jason, who is the center for the Philadelphia Eagles, Travis is teaming up with Madden NFL in Minneapolis. The tight end has been playing Madden ever since he was a kid and can’t recall how many hours a week he plays on average because it’s too many to count. As a fan, being a part of a massive event involving the game is almost surreal.

“It’s all stuff that I can check off the bucket list and say you know what, that’s pretty cool that I did that,” Kelce said.

Kelce and New Orleans Saints rookie Alvin Kamara will be taking center stage at the EA Super Bowl party to show off their Madden skills. In addition, the event will feature musical guests Imagine Dragons, Machine Gun Kelly and Mura Masa. It all goes down in Minneapolis on Thursday at EA Sports’ unofficial kickoff to the Super Bowl.
