Princeton won’t win many recruiting battles against Alabama, but they can mark one in their corner now with Brevin White.

Each recruiting season, Nick Saban and Alabama get their pick of the best high school football prospects in the country. Programs at that level select more than recruit kids in many ways, and lesser programs are choosing from the leftovers for what could be any number of reasons.

Brevin White is a four-star prospect out of Paraclete High School in Lancaster, California, with Rivals (No. 13) ranking him highly among pro-style quarterbacks in the 2018 class. He committed to Princeton last July amid offers from multiple Pac-12 schools (Washington, Washington State, Utah, Arizona State, Oregon State). Offers also came from Tennessee and some non-Power 5 schools (Boise State, Memphis, Colorado State, Fresno State, Cincinnati).

Alabama entered the fray for White pretty late, with an offer on Jan. 25. That would cause any recruit to re-think things, and White had to take an official visit. But according to CBS Sports, White called Saban on Friday with his decision to stay at Princeton.

"I just wanted to stick with my heart. I wanted to lay out whats important to me and what school offers me the best opportunity to achieve goals on an off field. Alabama is a great school and a great opportunity, but Princeton checks more boxes,” White told CBS Sports."

It would take a very special school to “check more boxes” for a football recruit than Alabama does. But White is honoring his initial commitment to Princeton, and as a planned economics major he has his eye on a career in finance if the NFL is not an option after college.

It’s rare, but not unheard of, for an Ivy league quarterback to make it to the NFL. Jason Garrett (Princeton), Ryan Fitzpatrick (Harvard) and Jay Fiedler (Dartmouth) are the most prominent recent examples. White could be next in that line, but he has a good plan if it’s not in the cards.
