Wide Receiver. SMU. Courtland Sutton. 9. player. 42.

The San Francisco 49ers hit the jackpot during the 2017 NFL trade deadline, as they swung a deal for Jimmy Garoppolo. Playing behind Tom Brady, Garoppolo was not going to get a chance to start any time soon, especially since Brady was named the league’s MVP once again. While it took a bit for the team to turn to Jimmy G, once he was inserted into the starting lineup,  they did not lose again, and their main priority this offseason is locking him up long-term.

When it comes to the 49ers offense, they need some help at the skill positions. Sure, Carlos Hyde is a nice running back, and the team got a good effort from Marquise Goodwin this season. Still, they need to bring in more depth at the wide receiver position, and Courtland Sutton from SMU would be a nice grab at No. 9.

Sutton does play for SMU, so he did not get a ton of publicity this season. However, he is one of the better athletes in this draft class, and has the ability to really take the lid off a defense. Garoppolo looks like he is going to be a star, and the 49ers were a legitimate team with him under center, so getting him more weapons on the offensive side of the ball has to be the way to go for San Fran in the first round.
