Twitter hilariously blames Nintendo Toad reveal for stock market plunge

It’s not quite as funny for people with a lot of money in stocks, we admit.

It all started innocently enough. As reported by Polygon, Nintendo released a new Super Mario Dev. Talk video with Super Mario Odyssey producer Yoshiaki Koizumi, which you can see below. In it, he answered one of the great gaming mysteries of our time: Is Toad wearing a hat, or is that mushroom part of his head.

Koizumi-san zigged where people expected him to zag. That is, apparently Toad’s head.

Not a hat.

"“So that, as it turns out, is actually Toad’s head. I’m going to have to leave it to all of you to figure out exactly how that works out. Maybe there’s something inside…”"

At the same time, the stock market was having one of its worst days in recent memory, with the Dow plunging more than 1500 points at one point. Coincidence? Twitter believes not in such things.

Man, Nintendo, you probably never expected you were carrying such a heavy burden when it comes to the true nature of Toad. But what’s done is done.

It’s worth mentioning that the video also addressed the equally thorny but much newer question about why Mario is seen in Super Mario Odyssey sporting nipples but no belly button. At least for that one, the answer was more or less, “we really didn’t think that one all the way through,” which is both honest and less troubling in its financial market implications.

In any case, this makes one worry just a bit about the inevitable Super Mario Odyssey 2 and the though that the devs are going to have to put into every character decision, knowing the awesome responsibility they have in safeguarding the economic underpinnings of all of Western society. We don’t envy them, but we’ll play the heck out of the game when it arrives.
