Arizona State hiring Herm Edwards as head coach was met with much criticism, and his musings on college recruiting won’t help things.

Herm Edwards wasn’t exactly greeted with open arms by Arizona State Sun Devils fans. When the announcement was made that the former NFL head man would be filling the head coaching vacancy in Tempe, there were many who opposed the decision. The primary concern for many was that Edwards had no experience at this type of position.

As a result, many Sun Devils fans looked towards National Signing Day and the recruiting process through their fingers with their heads in their hands. They dreaded the thought of someone who’s never been a recruiter competing on the West Coast with the giants of the Pac-12 in recruiting. As it turns out, those people were right to be concerned.

With National Signing Day coming to a close, Edwards has done an abysmal job with the recruiting. Arizona State currently has the worst recruiting class ranking of any Power 5 school, not even cracking the top 75 in the 247 Sports Composite Rankings. That alone is enough to make fans cringe.

But just to make matters worse, Edwards gave an interview with ESPN in which he discussed the changes from the NFL and the recruiting process. In doing so, he proved Sun Devils fans’ worst fears — that he’s absolutely horrible at this:

Welp. The head coach at a Power 5 school just mused about recruiting for college football being different than the NFL Draft. Thank you for the revelation.

Honestly, you have to feel badly for Arizona State fans. This was a hiring that raised concerns from the start. And every move and comment since then has only furthered those negative feelings. I have a feeling this won’t be the last, either.
