The Kings and Raptors swap hypothetically talented wings
By Ian Levy
The Toronto Raptors and Sacramento Kings made a small trade before Thursday’s deadline, with Bruno Cabcolo going to Sacramento and Malachi Richardson headed to Toronto.
The Kings hopped into a big trade with the Cavaliers and Jazz, shedding George Hill’s monster contract while adding Joe Johnson and a future second-round pick from the Cavs. Johnson will likely be bought-out so he can join a contender, saving the Kings even more money. They followed that up with another smaller deal a few minutes later.
Neither Richardson or Cabcolo are significant players, both still mostly defined by their potential.
Richardson is in his second season with the Kings after just one season at Syracuse University. He’s appeared in just 25 games for Sacramento, averaging 12.8 minutes per game. His per 36 minute numbers — 9.8 points, 3.7 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.1 steals — don’t exactly set the world on fire but, in theory, he’s a long, athletic wing who could develop into a floor-spacer and secondary ball-handler.
Bruno Cabocolo is best known for being described as, “two years away from being two years away,” when the Raptors selected him in the 2014 NBA Draft. He’s appeared in just 25 games across four NBA seasons, speaking to just how raw his game his and how small his role was in Toronto’s organization.
Cabcolo is still just 22 years old and has been impressive at times for the Raptors G League franchise. He has tremendous physical tools and is averaging 14.4 points, 6.5 points, 1.3 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.6 blocks per game for the Raptors 905 this season. He is undoubtedly a project but could still blossom into something useful for Sacramento, who desperately need depth on the wing.

This deal will be overshadowed by the wild moves of the Cleveland Cavaliers but it could turn out to be an important deal for one of these two teams a few years down the road.
