Team USA will have 26 total riders competing in snowboarding events at Pyeongchang. All eyes will be on icon Shaun White, who recently scored a perfect 100 in halfpipe at the U.S. Grand Prix in Snowmass, Colorado this past November. If White brings home the gold, he will be the first snowboarder in Olympic history to have more than two gold medals. Current double-gold medal holders other than White include Team USA’s Seth Wescott [Snowboard Cross] and Switzerland’s Philipp Schoch [Parallel Giant Slalom].

Snowboarding was first added to the Winter Olympics in the 1998 games in Nagano, Japan. During this period there were only four snowboarding events at the 1998 and 2002 games. There’s currently 5 men’s events, 5 women’s events, and 1 mixed event [Team Ski-Snowboard Cross]. Ski and Snowboard Slopestyle were only added to the winter games back in 2014 in Sochi, after being approved in 2011 by the International Olympic Committee. It’s a relatively young Olympic sport, all things considering.

Team USA currently holds the most medals in the sport with 24 overall and 10 gold. Switzerland is the next top medal gatherer with 12 overall and 7 gold medals and France has 10 overall and 3 gold. Canada is right there with France in terms of gold medals with 3 to their name and 7 medals overall.
