Olympic figure skating: Women’s free skate team results and highlights

The fight for the team medal continues at the 2018 Winter Olympics in the women’s team free skate. We have the results and highlights for you right here.

Team USA’s Mirai Nagasu debuted at the 2018 Winter Olympics in the women’s team free skate event, the penultimate event in the team competition before team medals are awarded.

Heading into the competition, the United States sat in 3rd place behind 2nd place Olympic Athletes From Russia and 1st place Canada.

Mirai Nagasu skated first in the lineup and she blew everyone away when she landed an historic triple axel, the first time a United States woman has ever been able to complete the element in Olympics competition. She finished with 137.53, good for first place. Nagasu missed making the 2014 Sochi Olympics team but tonight’s performance proved that she belongs on Team USA and she could be a gold medal contender.

Team Canada’s Gabrielle Daleman had a nice cushion going into her skate thanks to her team, and she was rewarded with a 137.14, good for 2nd place. Italy’s Carolina Kostner, who skated in the short program, earned a 134.00.

Olympic Athletes from Russia’s Alina Zagitova rounded out the group and completed a solid, strong performance that will give her teammates a run for their money. She finished with a 158.08, good for 1st place and the highest technical score in the current scoring system.

Here are the final results for the women’s team free skate program:

  1. Olympic Athletes from Russia – Alina Zagitova – 158.08 (10 points)
  2. United States – Mirai Nagasu – 137.53 (9 points)
  3. Canada – Gabrielle Daleman – 137.14 (8 points)
  4. Italy – Carolina Kostner – 134.00 (7 points)
  5. Japan – Kaori Sakamoto – 131.91 (6 points)

After the women’s team free skate program, Team USA received 9 points, lifting them to 53 points overall and putting them in 3rd place going into the final team event. Canada has the lead with 63 points, followed by Olympic Athletes from Russia with 58 points in 2nd place. The ice dance free dance is the final event in the team competition.
