Basel’s qualification to the knockout rounds has been an underrated aspect of the Champions League as a whole. Both Benfica and CSKA Moscow are better teams on paper and were predicted to have better odds at second place in their group. Basel came out on top, though, with two wins against Benfica, one over CSKA and a shock matchday five victory over Manchester United in Switzerland.

Colombian center-back and legend of Football Manager Eder Alvarez Balanta has been the club’s top performer so far, with an average WhoScored match rating of 7.32. Dimitri Oberlin is their top scorer, the young Swiss forward comes in with four goals in the competition.

Both Balanta and Oberlin are hot prospects who will be looking to leave their mark against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

City are coming off of a 5-1 route of Leicester City where Sergio Aguero found the back of the net four times. Guardiola is expected to feature a lot of rotation in this match and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he gave some youngsters a shot.

Guardiola stressed adding depth to his squad in the January window but seems to have come up short of that goal, with Aymeric Laporte being the only key acquisition they made. Yaya Toure and Oleksandr Zinchenko are two players who have featured sparingly this season, but Guardiola did use them in their Carabao cup matchup with Bristol City so don’t be surprised if they are chosen again.
