Gleyber Torres expected to be a ‘full-go’ in spring training

Gleyber Torres is the New York Yankees most prized prospect. After getting Tommy John surgery last year he’s expected to be at full strength this spring.

The New York Yankees are coming into the 2018 season with new faces and high expectations. Giancarlo Stanton is the biggest of the additions they’ve made, but amid all the Stanton frenzy there’s one guy that can’t be overlooked. That would be the club’s number one prospect, Gleyber Torres.

He is coming back for Tommy John surgery after tearing his UCL sliding head first into home last June. Fortunately the recovery time for position players to come back from such an injury is shorter than a pitcher’s so he is expected to be a “full-go” when spring training games start at the end of the month.

The Yankees prospect also said he won’t be sliding headfirst anymore which might not be a bad idea. He’s already suffered one injury doing that, and how many times have we seen a guy break or tear a ligament in their thumb sliding headfirst? It’s just not worth it and the quite frankly the Yankees need Torres more than he knows.

Torres is expect to take one of the two open spots the Yankees have on the infield. Most likely it will be second base should the Yankees feel confident enough to play his Triple-A teammate Miguel Andujar at third base everyday.

The fact that Torres is comfortable playing second base is a big sigh of relief, because the Yankees would probably prefer him to play there seeing as they have hopes of signing Manny Machado next offseason.

The Yankees might also want to keep Torres at second base because there’s still a shot of them bringing in a free agent to play the hot corner this season. Someone like Mike Moustakas would definitely keep Torres on the right side of the infield for this season.

Yankees fans have to be excited to see what Torres is capable of this spring.
