What a four years it has been for Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. HBO really struck gold with their writing staff and format for the show, as its weekly recap opening mixed in with a main segment of the week has given us no-holds-barred comedic commentary paired with an important message for us all to remember going forward.

Unfortunately, as much as John Oliver “eviscerated” its segments back in 2014, as we arrive at the premiere of Last Week Tonight season 5 this evening, it appears as though we’ve still had amazing difficulty to tackle problems brought up with his show. Net neutrality, payday loans, student debt, civil asset forfeiture and incarceration were all covered as subjects in just the first season alone, and issues stemming from those subjects remain to this day.

Nevertheless, John Oliver’s duty as host of Last Week Tonight has been to both entertain and educate through comedy, and he’s done an impeccable job of getting information and laughter through the television. Ever since Jon Stewart left The Daily Show, his crew at Last Week Tonight has been racking up Emmys for writing and variety talk series categories, taking over the mantle from his former boss.

The comedic aspects of the show have remained serious with an undercut of silly. Getting wax statues of former presidents to act out scenes with Academy Award-winning actors and nominees such as Tom Hanks and Laura Linney, respectively, buying out airtime on Fox News to educate the president on important issues; they’re willing to go that extra mile and extra dollar to have fun while making a point.
