5. Sheldon Richardson

The Seahawks traded for Sheldon Richardson early in the 2017-18 season, and boy did it pay dividends. He only accumulated one sack, but his presence was surely felt and he was a disruptive force on the line. However, given that the Seahawks also have to consider what they want to do with Jimmy Graham, this decision becomes interesting. Teams are only allowed to utilize one tag, so the Seahawks will have to decide between the two.

Richardson provides more long term value as he is only 27 years old. Given the fact that the Seahawks have endured some injuries to their defense, it would make sense to keep him around. Tagging Richardson would give them another season to work out a deal that is suitable for both sides.

Should he be tagged, the Seahawks would be making him their highest paid defensive player. Currently, Richard Sherman, who is coming off of an Achilles injury, is making about $14 million. The tag would mean Richardson would earn an estimated $14.15 million, edging out Sherman. The tag also makes quite a bit of sense because if they were to extend him, they would likely give him a very similar amount. This way, if things don’t pan out and he takes a step back, the team isn’t tied to him for years to come.

Richardson played well for Seattle, evidently the change of scenery worked wonders for him. With a talented group of guys around him, Richardson is really able to perform. As a result, it would not be surprising for the Seahawks to slap the tag on him to ensure he stays in Seattle while they work out a multi-year deal.
