Germany defeats Switzerland 2-1 in overtime to advance in the Olympic men’s hockey tournament.

It took overtime, but Germany got it done against Switzerland in the Olympic men’s hockey tournament.

Yannic Seidenberg was the hero for the Germans, knocking home a rebound just 26 seconds into overtime. Jonas Hiller made the initial stop on Dominik Kahun, but Seidenberg used his strength to establish position in front of Hiller, giving him the first crack at the rebound. He made no mistake and put Germany through to the quarterfinals.

Things looked bad for Switzerland from the start as Cody Almond was assessed a five-minute penalty and a game misconduct just nine seconds into the contest for elbowing Christian Ehrhoff in the head. Germany would capitalize with a power play goal from Leonhard Pfoderl, who blasted a point shot through Hiller.

Germany would take four penalties in the first period, but Switzerland failed to make them pay, going 0-4 on the ensuing power plays.

Simon Moser tied things up 3:40 into the second period, banging home a loose puck into an empty net following a scramble in front. Andres Ambuhl and Plus Suter did the hard work along the boards and in front to create the chance, Moser was in the right place at the right time.

Germany outshot Switzerland 25-21 in the game. Switzerland will be kicking themselves for the missed opportunities on the power play. Along with an 0-4 first period, they went 0-2 in the third period and never created a good chance in the final 20 minutes.
