Marcel Hirscher already claimed the Alpine combined and giant slalom gold medals. Can he become the first Alpine skier to win three golds in one Olympics?

Marcel Hirscher entered the 2018 Winter Olympics as one of the most accomplished Alpine skiers in history. The Austrian star is a six-time world champion, including the defending slalom king after winning the event at the 2017 FIS World Championships in St. Moritz. An Olympic gold medal, though, had eluded Hirscher in his first two Olympic appearances in 2010 and 2014.

That all changed over the first week of Alpine skiing events. Hirscher took advantage of the shortened downhill course and then dominated the slalom course set up at Jeongseon to claim Alpine combined gold. He then followed that up with a resounding gold-medal performance in the giant slalom, finishing more than a second ahead of Norway’s Henrik Kristoffersen over two runs.

No Alpine skier has ever won three gold medals in a single Winter Olympics. Hirscher will enter this year’s slalom as the undisputed favorite. The current leader on the FIS circuit has won an unprecedented six consecutive World Cup all-around titles thanks to his prowess in the technical events. He could set history in the final men’s event of the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Who could possibly challenge Hirscher for the gold?

The only person within 150 points of Hirscher on the World Cup slalom circuit is Henrik Kristoffersen. The Norwegian came in second behind Hirscher in the giant slalom, and Kristoffersen will be gunning for at least silver once again.

When the slalom gets underway, the biggest battle could be among a slew of contenders for the bronze. Sweden’s Andre Myhrer and Austria’s Michael Matt could both challenge Hirscher. Then there is also the Swiss trio of Daniel Yule, Luca Aerni, and Ramon Zenhäusern. All three will vie for podium positioning.

But in a field that has struggled to beat Hirscher all season at his best event, this Olympic slalom could punch the Austrian’s name into the history books in perpetuity.
