Olympics Men’s Team Sprint Free medal results, highlights and more
By Zach Bigalke
The men contested the penultimate competition in cross-country skiing, with Norway snatching yet another gold medal in the process.
Sweden started out strong in the men’s team sprint, leading after the first few exchanges. But the team of Marcus Hellner and Calle Halfvarsson could not maintain the momentum for the entire race. The Swedes faded in the second half of the race, eventually falling off the podium and finishing fourth.
It was hardly a surprise when Norway overtook their Scandinavian rivals. Norway has been the dominant country at this year’s Winter Olympics. The Scandinavian powerhouse is well ahead in the total medal count with 33 total medals. The gold won by the sprint team of Martin Johnsrud Sundby and Johannes Klæbo was the 13th gold medal for Norway at Pyeongchang 2018.
Sundby and Klæbo added to the gold they helped Norway secure in the 4x10km relay. By the end, the duo built up a lead of 1.71 seconds en route to the top step of the podium.

The two teams joining Norway on the podium were also no surprise. Competing under the Olympic flag, Russians Denis Spitsov and Alexander Bolshunov found themselves in a similar position as they finished in the team relay. Though they put in the fastest split time on the final round of the course, the OAR pair could not catch Klæbo and Sundby.
Spitsov and Bolshunov, however, did manage to hold off the French team for silver. Maurice Manificat and Richard Jouve stopped the clock more than a full second ahead of the fading Swedes. Manificat and Jouve claimed France’s second bronze medal in cross-country skiing of these Olympics.
The men of cross-country skiing now get just one more chance to realize Olympic glory before the conclusion of Pyeongchang 2018. They will tackle the 50-kilometer mass start on the final day of the Winter Games.
