Germany proved its sweep of the individual large hill podium was no fluke, winning the team competition in Nordic combined. Norway claimed the silver.

Germany dominated the Olympics in Nordic combined in 2018. With gold in all three Nordic combined events, nobody else comes close to challenging Germany’s primacy in the discipline. The sport closed out its calendar on Feb. 22 with a resounding win by the Germans in the team competition.

In the ski jumping portion of the combined, Austria actually finished ahead of Germany by 1.8 points. Coming in third on the large hill was Japan, with Norway hovering just behind in fourth. The combination of scores from the ski jump were then calculated, using the Gundersen method, to determine the time splits for the cross-country relay portion of the team competition.

By the midway point of the first skier’s five kilometers, Germany had already overtaken Austria and began to build an insurmountable lead. No other country held down first place once the Germans laid claim. Vincenz Geiger passed Wilhelm Denifl on the first leg, and there was no looking back.

Once the 20 kilometers were in the books, Germany won by nearly a minute. Taking silver was Norway, the country that has dominated most events in Pyeongchang. The Norwegians charged into medal position with a strong cross-country relay. Jørgen Graabak passed Mario Seidl on the final leg of the relay, charging in for the second spot on the podium. Austria had to settle for bronze after leading the way out of the ski jumping portion of the event.

It was the first medal Norway captured in the Nordic combined events. In an Olympics where they have been ever-present on medal podiums, it was only fitting that the Norwegians diversified into a new event. More fitting, though, was Germany closing out the Nordic combined competition with a perfect sweep of the gold medals. Nobody could threaten German dominance in the individual events, and their gold medalists provided the catalyst to win one more gold for the trophy haul.

The United States came in last out of 10 teams, beginning the cross-country relay ninth and fading behind Italy in the end. After breaking out in the event at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, the Americans faded right back to obsolescence over the past two Olympic cycles.
