It was a rough night for Team USA as the women’s free skate program came to a close at the 2018 Winter Olympics. Here are your results and highlights.

Team USA skated in the middle of the 24 skaters in the free skate event, but they weren’t able to stay in the top three for long as the last group of skaters dominated the competition. After the free skate, the gold medal went to Russia’s Alina Zagitova, silver went to teammate Yevgenia Medvedeva and bronze went to Canada’s Kaetlyn Osmond.

Bradie Tennell was able to skate a relatively clean free program with only a few errors. This was better than her two previous routines, and she was rewarded with a free skate score of 128.34, which was good enough to keep her in the top three for a short period of time.

Tennell’s score in the free skate was better than her teammates Karen Chen (119.75) and Mirai Nagasu (119.61). Both women had errors in their skates, likely due to nerves that kept them from higher scores.

In the end, after it was clear that Team USA’s shot at a medal was gone, the focus shifted to the battle between Russian superstars Alina Zagitova and Yevgenia Medvedeva.

Zagitova skated first, wowing the crowd with her sequences of complex triple jumps. Her entire program was flawless, setting up a possible upset over reigning champion Medvedeva. Her score of 156.65, when paired with her short program score of 82.92, gave her a 239.57 overall and that was good for first place.

With Alina Zagitova at the top, the battle for the podium heated up as Kaetlyn Osmond’s performance gave her a 151.15, which put her in second place and guaranteed her a medal with a 231.02 overall, ahead of Japan’s Satoko Miyahara’s 222.38.

Last to skate was reigning champion Yevgenia Medvedeva. She looked calm and collected heading onto the ice and she delivered a beautiful performance. Stuffed animals rained down onto the ice after her skate as she allowed the emotion of the moment to hit her. She earned a 156.65, which combined with her short program 81.61 for a 238.26, good for the silver medal.
