The men’s 1000-meter speedskating final for the gold medal took place Feb. 23. Here are the results, times and highlights.

All eyes were on Shani Davis at the start of the men’s 1000-meter speedskating race. Davis drew headlines early in the games for his tweets about the U.S. flag bearer decision and relatively poor performance in the 1500-meter. However, the 1000-meter has always been his race — the race he won back-to-back golds in 2006 and 2010, making all sorts of history along the way.

However, the favorites in the race were the Dutch (no surprise there) Kjeld Nuis and Kai Verbij and Vince De Haitre of Canada, though of the three only Nuis ultimately placed — and gold, no less. Unfortunately, there was no storybook ending for Davis, either, who came seventh, 0.83 seconds off Nuis.

Joey Mantia — a medal hopeful in the men’s mass start — came the closest of the Americans to the podium, but, in what seems to be classic fashion for Team USA at the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics, he came in fourth.

After a race that lasted little over a minute, Netherlands’ Kjeld Nuis had gold, Norway’s Havard Lorentzen owned silver and South Korea’s Kim Tae-Yun took home bronze.

Olympic speedskating continues on Saturday morning with two new events: the women and men’s mass start, in which speedskaters imitate their short track peers 24 skaters at a time for 6,400-meters. American Joey Mantia is expected to medal.
