The Olympic Athletes from Russia took home Olympics men’s hockey gold with a 4-3 victory in overtime over Germany.

On the power play, up by a goal, one minute remaining in regulation. What could go wrong for Germany in the gold medal game of the Olympics men’s hockey tournament?

It started when Yannic Seidenberg decided to dump the puck in, relinquishing possession to the Olympics Athletes from Russia. OAR moved quickly up ice, pulled thei goaltender for the extra attacker, and caused a scramble in front. The puck eventually game to Nikita Gusev, who threw a backhand shot past Danny Aus Den Birken for his second of the game to tie things at three.

In overtime, Patrick Reimer caught Pavel Datsyuk with a high stick, putting OAR on a 4-on-3 power play. Gusev slipped a cross ice feed to Kirill Kaprizov, who made no mistake on the one-timer. The 4-on-3 power play goal gave OAR a 4-3 victory and Olympic gold.

OAR got on the board first thanks to a slap shot by Vyacheslav Voinov with .5 seconds. Germany played a near perfect first period, but Voinov’s goal looked to be a backbreaker that would lead to the eventual OAR route.

To Germany’s credit, the team responded well in the second period and eventually got a puck past Koshechkin on a soft backhand from the goal line by Felix Shutz.

It was in the third period that things got crazy. Gusev scored his first of the game on a sharp angle shot over the shoulder of Aus Den Birken. 10 seconds later, Dominik Kahun finished off a Frank Mauer pass in the low slot following a great Germany forecheck to tie it at 2.

Jonas Muller looked to be the hero with 3:16 remaining in the game. He took a pass from Yasin Ehliz as he entered the zone, showed tremendous patience with the puck, and eventually found his opening through the legs of Koshechkin.

Aus Den Birken finished with 26 saves while Koshechkin had 22 saves. Gusev capped off a fantastic tournament with four points. He had 12 points in six games.
