Watch Iowa’s Jordan Bohannon miss free throw to maintain shared record (Video)
It would have been easy for Jordan Bohannon to set a school record for the Iowa Hawkeyes, but he chose not to.
With the FBI investigation starting to name some names and indiscretions in college basketball, the sport is in need of a positive story. On Sunday, one came.
Heading into Iowa’s home game against Northwestern, sophomore guard Jordan Bohannon was within range of Chris Street’s school record of 34 straight made free throws. With the Hawkeyes up 73-65 with just over two minutes left, and the result honestly not really in doubt, Bohannon stepped to the line with a chance to make his 35th straight free throw.
Bohannon, as could be expected, is an 89 percent foul shooter this season. But he was clearly aware of where he stood in the Iowa record book in that moment, and offered a free throw attempt that was not up to his standard.
After the game Bohannon openly acknowledged that he missed intentionally, in order to keep Street’s name atop the record book.
Street was a star for the Hawkeyes under coach Tom Davis in the early 90s and tragedy struck on Jan. 19, 1993. He was killed when the car he was driving was struck by a snowplow. The 25th anniversary of his death has just passed, but Street still carries a special place in Hawkeyes’ men’s basketball lore. One of the most tangible ways to maintain his memory to the outside world is the all-time consecutive free throw record, and Bohannon choose to do his part to maintain it as a shared accomplishment.
Bohannon is an Iowa native, and he said he has gotten to know Street’s family over the last couple years. Street’s parents were in attendance on Sunday, and Bohannon shared a moment with them.

Bohannon had 25 points on Sunday, on 7-for-14 from beyond the arc and 4-for-5 from the line. That one miss at the foul line will stand as a moment during an otherwise unremarkable game, and as a worthy tribute to Street.
