A look at which NCAA teams are locking up which seeds for the March Madness Tournament.

A lot has changed since we first debuted the top seed predictions, teams dropped out of the top 16 and some (that are in these rankings) are the subject of FBI investigations. There will be more fireworks to occur as we venture towards the start of the tournament which is only two weeks away.

As for what is actually happening on the hardwood, we’ve reached the point where we-well, I feel comfortable in locking up some number one seeds. Three have been locked up, one remains but who will get it is the bigger question.

No. 1 Seeds

Virginia (South-Atlanta) (26-2) (No. 1 Seed locked up)

Villanova (East-Boston) (25-4) (No. 1 Seed locked up)

Xavier (West-Los Angeles) (25-4)

Kansas (Midwest-Omaha) (23-6) (No. 1 Seed locked up)

That’s right, we’ve got some seeds already locked up. While some of you may think it’s too soon to do this, do it next week would be delaying the inevitable. Virginia, Villanova, and Kansas have proven that they are worthy of a number one seed, even with Villanova’s loss to Creighton. The numbers are there for all three teams.

Now, the question is who gets the last number one seed.

Xavier and Michigan State are in a two-team race for the last spot. While nothing really changes with the top eight teams, aside from Nova taking care of business. Xavier has two games this week while Michigan State starts their journey in the Big Ten Tournament, yes a week early in New York City. Now, if Xavier falters then Michigan State can slide in if they have a good showing in the Big Ten Tournament. Their issue is they have a ton of wins but none of them are good.

When you look at the quadrant aspect to this, you see that Michigan State has six games against “Quadrant 1” opponents. Meanwhile, Xavier has six wins vs. “Quadrant 1” opponents. Pending an absolute meltdown by Xavier, they should be locking up the final No. 1 seed this time next week.

Games of note this week

Feb. 28

Providence at Xavier

Final home game of the season for the Musketeers, Providence has pulled off a few upsets in 2018, they could do it again.

Villanova at Seton Hall

Villanova should win this game, a loss doesn’t take them off the one line but you surely start asking questions about the Wildcats heading into the Big East Tournament.

Mar. 1

Virginia at Louisville

Having already wrapped up the ACC, Virginia gets a nice road test near the end of the season.

Mar. 3

Kansas at Oklahoma State

Kansas hasn’t been great on the road and to make matters worse, they haven’t been great in Stillwater over the years.
