Minnesota Twins: Lance Lynn
For small-market teams like the Twins, hitting your window is absolutely imperative. The timing gods have absolutely handed Minnesota everything on a silver platter as they transition away from rebuilding and into contending. Three of the five teams in the AL Central are rebuilding, and not in the ways of old. The Tigers, White Sox and Royals all have the potential to be among the five-worst teams in baseball. That gives the Twins 57 games to feast on inferior competition.
Weak schedule aside, the Twins need to step up and keep their own foot on the gas. They’re still playing for a Wild Card behind the Indians at the top of the division. Whichever team finishes second in the AL East will also claim a playoff spot barring an epic collapse. That leaves the Twins fighting against some very good teams from the AL West to return to the playoffs for a second season in a row.
Jake Arrieta is still out there, but the Twins just don’t feel like they’re gearing up to spend over $100 million on a starting pitcher — and they might not need to. Jose Berrios flashed ace potential last season and looks ready to carry a staff with the always solid Ervin Santana. What the Twins need is another dependable arm at the right price to keep them in games.
With the exception of his missed season to Tommy John, Lance Lynn has been a very solid starter, making over 30 starts in each of his four full years in the St. Louis Cardinals rotation. The 30-year-old is 72-47 with a 3.38 ERA in six seasons in the big leagues. He’s a proven winner and a workhorse — exactly what the Twins need.
