Chicago White Sox: Mike Moustakas

The lagging market for All-Star third baseman Mike Moustakas has given the White Sox an opportunity to jump in and land a big name to help advance the rebuilding process. With one of the deepest farm systems in the league headlined by a crop of future aces in Michael Kopech and Lucas Giolito, the White Sox could pop much sooner than most baseball fans realize. The front office seems to understand this, as evidenced by the team’s interest in trading for Manny Machado earlier this offseason.

The White Sox did their rebuild the right way. They did not wait until after it was too late, or try to hold on too long to a mediocre ballclub. It was a painful breakup with Chris Sale, Adam Eaton and Jose Quintana, but the pieces coming back in are among the biggest prospects in the game.

With plenty of money to spend, the White Sox can add a foundational piece to push the rebuild along. Moustakas is not a transformational player, but he is an established veteran who is beginning to come into his own as a power hitter.

The South Siders have good pieces sprinkled around the diamond, and can propel themselves further ahead of schedule with a solid veteran at a lower cost than predicted at the start of the offseason. Signing Moustakas would also not prevent the team from making an aggressive offer for Machado next winter, and might actually make them a more attractive destination.
