There were new stars, veterans who gained newfound glory, and historic moments in the 2018 Winter Olympics. We broke down our favorite 10 times that Olympic figure skating proved to be as exciting as it possibly could.

The technical firsts and push were breathtaking to watch in the ladies, men’s, pairs’, and ice dancing events. But even with all the incredible tricks and feats, there were artistic moments that simply took our breath away.

Taking in all the awesomeness from this year’s Olympic figure skating, here are times that made us cry, shout with joy, gave us goosebumps, and endlessly gabbed about them the day afterwards to the annoyance of friends, family, and colleagues.

10. Mirai Nagasu becomes first U.S. woman to land triple axel in the Olympics

Mirai Nagasu propelled the American figure skating team to the bronze with her historic feat, becoming the first U.S. woman to land the daunting triple axel in the Olympics. She achieved the impressive feat during the ladies free skate in the team event, culminating in a thrilling finish that allowed Team U.S.A. to claim a bronze medal.

The 24-year-old was unable to repeat the achievement in her own free skate in the individual events—resulting in the worst performance by American women since anyone can remember—but the historic achievement in the team event was electrifying, nonetheless, and one of the most exciting moments from the Winter Games this time around.

“I feel really great,” Mirai Nagasu said according to The Guardian. “Going into it, I was like a train and I was like, ‘Get on the tracks and get some speed.’ And, I tripped a couple times. I don’t know if you could tell. It was more something I could feel, but to nail it the way I did, even out of the corner of my eye, I could see my team-mates standing out of excitement.

“Four years ago when I was left off the team, I wanted to make another Olympic team, and I knew I would really have to be something special,” Nagasu said. “So to become the first American to land a triple axel at the Olympic Games is historical, and no one can take that away from me.”
