Raiders release Aldon Smith after latest incident

The Oakland Raiders released outside linebacker Aldon Smith on Monday afternoon after the troubled youngster had another run-in with the law.

As for his NFL career, it seems his playing days are over, with the news coming down that the Oakland Raiders released the 28-year-old.

Smith, once one of the rising stars in the league, has now been dumped by both Bay Area teams due to his off-field behavior. The latest issue involves an alleged domestic violence altercation, with the victim suffering injuries.

The rap sheet on Smith is both long and depressing. It dates back to a DUI arrest in 2012 and includes three felony charges for weapons usage only six months later. Those were only the beginning of Smith’s legal troubles, with the ensuring years seeing another DUI arrest, a bomb threat at LAX and yet another DUI arrest.

Smith came into the league as a first-round pick out of the University of Missouri in 2011, drafted by the 49ers. In his first two seasons, Smith racked up a combined 33.5 sacks and was named a First-Team All-Pro in 2012, notching 19.5 sacks.

From there, things took a drastic turn downward. Since the start of the 2013 season, Smith has played a total of 27 games and amassed 14 sacks. After being released by the 49ers in 2014, the Raiders took a flier and stayed the course for three seasons, watching Smith suit up for nine total contests.

When all is said and done, Smith will go down as one of the great wastes of talent in NFL history.
