The Boston Bruins have moved into second place in the Atlantic Division, while the Detroit Red Wings are in fifth place and sliding out of playoff contention.

The Boston Bruins (88 points) may not be able to catch the Tampa Bay Lightning (94 points) for the No. 1 seed in the Atlantic Division ahead of the Stanley Cup playoffs, but there’s no question that Boston has cemented its playoff berth with a three-game winning streak.

On the other hand, the Red Wings, who snapped their playoff streak dating back to 1989-90 last season, are in danger of missing the postseason for a second straight year.

Though the math looks very bad for Detroit, the Red Wings could do themselves a favor by adding two points to their total with a win over the Bruins Tuesday night — and, most importantly, preventing Boston from becoming only the second team in the Eastern Conference with a point total in the 90s.

But it just doesn’t seem likely. The Bruins have been on a tear, thanks in no small measure to the scoring help of trade deadline acquisitions Rick Nash and Tommy Wingels.

That they’ve been able to win three in a row after losing top center Patrice Bergeron to a fractured foot has spoken volumes about the Bruins’ depth, though they’ll be tested on defense against the Red Wings. Boston lost rookie defenseman Charlie McAvoy on Saturday due to a lower-body injury he suffered against the Montreal Canadiens.

Canadiens forward Brendan Gallagher’s stick caught McAvoy in the foot in the first quarter of the rivals’ meeting:

But the Bruins have Brandon Carlo to join Zdeno Chara on the top pairing, and their blue line is deep enough to withstand the hit.

Here’s everything you need to know to watch the Bruins take on the Red Wings at TD Garden on Tuesday:
