Rex Burkhead rumors: Top 3 landing spots
After one season with the New England Patriots, running back Rex Burkhead will be searching for his third team in as many years.
Rex Burkhead was a hot name last offseason, signing with New England on an eventual one-year deal. As it turned out, Burkhead dealt with injuries and ineffectiveness, and is now back on the market. At 27 years old, he’ll be a fit for somebody, but only at a low price.
Burkhead was drafted out of Nebraska as a sixth-round pick by the Cincinnati Bengals in 2013, and spent his first four seasons in the Queen City. While there, he played alongside Jeremy Hill and Giovani Bernard, becoming effective as a blocker and receiver. For his career, Burkhead has 1,181 total yards from scrimmage.
Best fits
1. Los Angeles Chargers
The Chargers have a terrific offense, but they’re missing the compliment to Melvin Gordon. Los Angeles would be a nice landing spot for Burkhead, who could catch some passes in the flat from Philip Rivers, along with getting some short-yardage and goal line carries.
2. Denver Broncos
Denver needs to add weapons, and Burkhead would be a low-cost option. With the potential release of C.J. Anderson coming soon, the Broncos have to find a suitable replacement, and the best option would be a committee approach. Regardless of who the new quarterback is in the Mile High City, a safety valve in Burkhead would be appreciated.

3. Washington Redskins
Alex Smith is now under center in Washington, and the Pro Bowler needs support. Chris Thompson is fantastic when healthy, but that’s always a concern with him. Additionally, Smith has always loved throwing short and to his backs, making Burkhead an ideal fit. The Redskins also finished 28th in rushing yardage last season, gaining 1,448 yards as a team.
