The Seattle Seahawks are releasing cornerback Richard Sherman, giving him time to find a new home on the free-agent market.

On Friday, the long-rumored release of Richard Sherman was made official by the Seattle Seahawks, who are moving on from the Legion of Boom. Sherman, 29, has been one of the best players of his generation at any position, notching four Pro Bowls, three First-Team All-Pro teams and one Second-Team All-Pro honor.

After tearing his Achilles tendon back in November against the Arizona Cardinals, the writing was on the wall. Seattle is strapped for cash with a litany of impending free agents, including Paul Richardson, Jimmy Graham and Sheldon Richardson. When general manager John Schneider decided against using the franchise tag, and then dealt Michael Bennett to the Philadelphia Eagles on Wednesday afternoon, Sherman’s fate was sealed.

By moving on from Sherman, Seattle saves $11 million against the camp this season, giving it roughly $27 million to spend when the Bennett trade becomes official on March 14.

Still, Sherman’s impact in Seattle can’t be overstated. The charter member of the Legion of Boom racked up 32 interceptions in his time, a Super Bowl ring and two Super Bowl appearances. He was the cornerstone of the franchise alongside Russell Wilson, and certainly its face. In a day and age where the NFL is about promoting offensive stars, Sherman was an exception.

The former Stanford star was undeniably the attitude of Seattle, something shown in his postgame interview with Erin Andrews following the Seahawks’ first trip to the Super Bowl.

Now, Sherman will test free agency for the first time in his career. Considering his injury, Sherman might attempt to sign a one-year, prove-it deal, or he could opt to go for long-term security if the numbers are right. Regardless, it will be fascinating to watch it play out in the coming days and weeks.
