NHL’s newest Mr. 600: Counting down Alexander Ovechkin’s top 5 goals
1. Ovechkin on his back: The sequel
Ovechkin did it again, scoring on his back a second time. It was during his great 2009 season when he added another highlight reel goal. This goal is Ovechkin’s best goal…so far. The goal was great, but what was even more impressive was the set up of the goal.
Ovechkin picks up an errant pass in the neutral zone. Most players would have driven wide and tried to beat the defenseman on the outside. Ovechkin decided to bank the puck off the boards past the defenseman as he spun past him on the other side. He raced into the zone and tried to fend off a defenseman, he was knocked to the ice but did not quit on the play. He slid toward the net and was able to lift the puck over the goalie and into the net.
Ovechkin put almost all his talents on display during this goal. His speed through the neutral zone to get to the puck, then the creativity to bank it off the boards with a full spin, his power to hold off the defenseman and his body control to lift the puck past the goalie. That goalie wasn’t just anyone, it was Carey Price who many think is the best in the world.

Ovechkin doesn’t show any sign of slowing down. He has been one of the most consistent goal scorers of this era. As his career continues he will continue to score goals and chase the Stanley Cup that has been eluding him for so long. As Ovechkin chases down the next 100 goals, there will be plenty of new highlights.
