Apparently there is a market for New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees in free agency. His agent is reportedly taking to the Minnesota Vikings.

If you can’t be ’em, join ’em. Well, technically Drew Brees did beat them back in 2009, but the last game he did play for the New Orleans Saints was against the Minnesota Vikings in the Minneapolis Miracle game. Brees’ Saints lost on a Hail Mary in the NFC Divisional Round up in Minneapolis in February.

Brees is in his late 30s and has been a mainstay in the Saints organization. He’ll certainly go down as the greatest player in franchise history, but what if he joins another team in the last years of his illustrious hall of fame career?

According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, “The Vikings have made a call on Drew Brees.” Brees is technically hitting free agency this spring, as the Saints cannot franchise tag him. Minnesota is clearly putting out all the feelers on this year’s quarterback market.

The Vikings have three of the top five quarterbacks hitting the free agent market already. However, Sam Bradford and Teddy Bridgewater have injury concerns and was Case Keenum just a one-year wonder in an ideal system? Minnesota had been linked to top free agent quarterback Kirk Cousins of the Washington Redskins.

However if Brees is available, he is the best quarterback of the bunch. No, he would not be a long-term fit for the Vikings. That being said, it didn’t stop Minnesota from previously taking a chance on Brett Favre in the latter part of his career. Favre did lead the 2009 Vikings to the NFC Championship. Unfortunately, Minnesota lost to Brees’ Saints on the worst pick of Favre’s hall of fame career.

The question remains would Brees get the Vikings over the top and into the Super Bowl? Brees would be an upgrade at quarterback in 2018 for sure. The Vikings have arguably the best defense in the NFC. They have two dynamic receivers in Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs. Running back Dalvin Cook might be coming off injury, but could be dynamic in year two out of Florida State.

Perhaps news of the Vikings speaking to Brees’ agent Tom Condon is just to drive up the bargaining price with the Saints? It would be a complete shocker if he left The Big Easy. Though the Saints don’t have the defense of the Vikings, they are also in win-now mode. New Orleans could totally represent the NFC in Super Bowl LIII down in Atlanta. However, they have no chance of getting to a Super Bowl without Brees, period.
