Tiger Woods is expected to be announced as the captain for the United States team at the 2019 Presidents Cup.

Tiger Woods is having himself a nice week.

For the first time in what feels like forever, the 14-time major champion was back in contention on a Sunday, coming up just short in his bid to win his 80th PGA Tour event over the weekend at the Valspar Championship. Tiger finished the tournament at 9-under, just one shot behind winner Paul Casey, a T-2 finish that vaulted him 239 spots in the Official World Golf Ranking to 149th. Woods was ranked 656th in the world at the end of 2017.

On the heels of yet another positive step in Tiger’s latest comeback, the Associated Press reported on Monday morning that Woods will be named the captain of the 2019 Presidents Cup in Australia, the bi-annual competition that features golfers from the United States taking on a team of international players … excluding those from countries in Europe, of course, which is saved for the Ryder Cup.

Woods, who will also serve as a vice captain to Jim Furyk at the Ryder Cup later this year just outside of Paris, will be joined in captaincy on the international side by longtime rival and four-time major championship winner Ernie Els. The official announcement of Tiger and Els as captains is expected to be made on Tuesday as part of the initial ceremonies for the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando, an event in which Tiger Woods will compete.

Among many of the battles between Woods and Els was their famous duel at the 2003 Presidents Cup in South Africa. With the score tied at 17-17 after all the matches had been played, Tiger and Els were chosen to represent their respective teams in a playoff. In near darkness, the two were tied after three playoff holes and captains Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player agreed to a draw. The 2019 Presidents Cup will take place December 12-15, 2019 at Royal Melbourne Golf Club.

The question now becomes: Will Tiger Woods be a playing captain?
