Everybody knows the New York Jets are going to draft a quarterback with the third overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft. But which one should they choose?

After dealing with the likes of Geno Smith, Ryan Fitzpatrick, and Christian Hackenberg in recent years, the New York Jets have finally decided to do something about it. In an impressive draft for quarterbacks, Gang Green has moved up to the third overall pick.

Of course, it wasn’t inexpensive. New York had two second-round picks in the 2018 draft. Now they have none. And at the very least, Gang Green won’t have their own in the 2019 draft. This makes it critical for the Jets to nail this pick. Whiffing on it will doom them and set them even further back in their rebuild.

Let’s be honest here, New York traded up to get a quarterback. So which one should they choose? In a perfect world, either the Browns or the Giants will go after the top running back, Saquon Barkley from Penn State. This would give them either Josh Rosen or Sam Darnold (most likely the latter). But the football gods like to torture Gang Green, so this isn’t happening.

The best one for them if Darnold and Rosen are gone is Baker Mayfield. Lamar Jackson could be an excellent quarterback if he gets drafted by a team wise enough to build an offense around his unique skill set. That’s not the Jets. Josh Allen is probably going to be a bust. He was horribly inaccurate in college. Why would you expect any different in the NFL?

However, Mayfield has what it takes to be a great quarterback. He has all the physical tools you love to see in a franchise signal-caller. Mayfield has great arm strength and very good accuracy. Yes, his footwork needs some work. But Mayfield has the football vision and athleticism necessary to make adjustments.

Most importantly, he’s the kind of cocky quarterback the Jets need. New York hasn’t had swagger since about the second season they had Rex Ryan as their head coach. Mayfield would bring it back in a huge way.

Some might have issues with his cockiness. But would you really want a quarterback who isn’t fully confident in his ability? Give me an arrogant quarterback over someone like Allen. At least the arrogant QB believes in himself.
