As DeMarco Murray searches for a new team, his free agency tour takes him to a visit with the Miami Dolphins.

After a dismal season essentially blocking Derrick Henry, and the ability to free up $6.5 million under the salary cap, DeMarco Murray was an easy cut for the Tennessee Titans. He has made visits to the Detroit Lions and Seattle Seahawks in the past several days, and according to Joe Schad of the Palm Beach Post, Murray will visit the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.

Murray set a career-low for rushing yards (659) last season, while tying a career-low for yards per carry (3.6). Since leading the league in rushing (1,845 yards) with the Dallas Cowboys in 2014, with a workload (392 carries, 57 receptions) among the biggest in NFL history for a season, Murray has topped 1,000 yards and four yards per carry just once in the last three seasons.

After Jay Ajayi was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles last season, Kenyan Drake eventually became Miami’s No. 1 running back. He had back-to-back 20-plus carry, 100-yard rushing games in Week 13 and 14, and at least 90 total yards in four of the final five games of the season. But the Dolphins were a dismal 29th in the league in rushing (86.8 yards per game) last year, and the fifth-worst scoring offense in the league (17.6 points per game) can use all the talent it can get.

Murray’s days as anything close to a workhorse are, or should be, over as he crossed into his 30s last month. But he is a capable pass catcher and blocker, which will allow him to maintain some value as he goes through the back end of his career.

With the prospect of an increased workload over a full season, the Dolphins clearly have some doubt about Drake’s ability to hold up physically. But any playing time split should still favor Drake pretty significantly, even if Murray signs and his name recognition suggests another arrangement.
