The UMBC Retrievers defeated Virginia in a historic upset Friday night during March Madness, and UCF made sure to chime in.

Possibly one of the biggest upsets in NCAA history took place Friday night when the little known UMBC took down top overall seed Virginia by a score of 74-54.

If you’ve never heard of the Retrievers before tonight, don’t feel too bad. The abbreviation stands for University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and they’re the same team that got thrashed by Albany, 83-39, less than two months ago.

One school seemed to take a special interest in their big victory and just couldn’t resist flapping their gums one more time.

For any fan that wasn’t paying attention during college bowl season, the UCF squad went undefeated and capped their season by defeating Auburn in the Peach Bowl. Since they were the only major college program to go without a loss, they felt it would be a reasonable move to crown themselves National Champion. Athletic director Danny White had this to say on The Dan Le Betard Show:

"Hopefully in the coming days, a lot more people will become believers, as well. We’re going to continue to promote the fact that we feel like we’re deserving of a national championship."

In fairness, they did beat Auburn, and Auburn was the only team to defeat both Georgia and Alabama, who played in the national title game. The school also did pay their coaches the bonus for winning the title, so they were actually very serious about the claim. That’s a gesture that they technically didn’t need to make.

While they have the right to claim whatever they please, it’s probably about time for them to quiet down. The point is well taken that any team can beat the higher seed on any give day. However, the systems for basketball and football are quite different. Basketball lets in 68 teams, football is just four teams. It’s difficult to believe that UCF was one of the best four teams, despite their record. UCF would also do well to remember that they didn’t beat Auburn until the bowl season, so a claim to make the playoffs was iffy at best.

This comes off as an attempt to piggyback off a massive upset. It’s March, UCF. It’s time to let it go. Let UMBC bask in the glory of their historic achievement like they should be right now.
