3 best fits for Marcedes Lewis after release from Jaguars
Marcedes Lewis needs a new home after being released by the Jacksonville Jaguars, and here are the best fits for both him and the team.
After signing Austin Seferian-Jenkins, the Jaguars have released Mercedes Lewis. The Jaguars get younger, replacing the 33-year-old with a 25-year-old but lose the 12-year veteran who has played his entire career with the team.
After posting the second highest touchdown total of his career last season with five, Lewis will be looking for a new team. Here are three places that he could fit in.
Detroit Lions
The Lions just released Eric Ebron which leaves them without an experienced tight end. Unless they are planning on just having Michael Roberts and his four career catches, they are in the market for the veteran tight end. His age is something that shouldn’t matter to them on a potential one-year deal. The team should compete now, not in the future, so his production would be vital in giving Matthew Stafford another target.
Denver Broncos
This depends on how highly they view Jake Butt. Last year’s fifth-round pick missed the entire season with an injury and it is unclear how they plan to progress with him. If they don’t trust him, Lewis is a great fit because he can be the lead tight end. However, even if they believe in Butt, Lewis can come in and help mentor him or give them a two-tight end set. For new quarterback Case Keenum, this would be a welcome sight.

Seattle Seahawks
After losing Jimmy Graham and being unable to sign Seferian-Jenkins the Seahawks need a tight end to throw to. Russell Wilson cannot only be throwing to Doug Baldwin and Tyler Lockett this year. The Seahawks have a top tier quarterback and wasting his prime years would be a grave mistake. Lewis would slide in easily as the No. 1 tight end option.
We could even see the Patriots trying to upgrade over Dwayne Allen in their two tight end package make a run at Lewis who may pursue a championship. At the end of the day, there are teams who need tight ends and Lewis can fill their need with solid production.
