2018 NFL Mock Draft: Jets trade up for Josh Rosen
By Brad Weiss
The San Francisco 49ers did what they had to do this offseason, locking up their franchise quarterback for the foreseeable future. The team signed Jimmy Garoppolo to a long-term deal, ensuring they have their man under center for 2018 and beyond. Garoppolo won every start he made last season, turning the 1-10 49ers into a 6-10 team, tying them with the Oakland Raiders for the ninth or tenth pick.
During the coin flip with the Raiders to decide where they pick, the 49ers won, and will pick ninth. The team needs a lot of help in the secondary, and they may be able to get a guy like Derwin James at No. 9 overall. James is a very versatile prospect, and had he not gotten hurt in 2016, he may be a top-5 pick this year.
James not only played safety at Florida State, but also cornerback, while being the top return man in school history. The 49ers are doing a nice job building up this roster, and James could be a game-changer at the next level. San Francisco could be this year’s Los Angeles Rams, as they seem to have the right pieces falling into the right place at the right time.
