WrestleMania XIX

Actual main event: Brock Lesnar vs. Kurt Angle

What the main event should have been: Brock Lesnar vs. Kurt Angle

Brock Lesnar vs. Kurt Angle may not have been the best match of WrestleMania XIX, but it was definitely the right call to close the show. The match of the night goes to Shawn Michaels vs. Chris Jericho, a match that could have just as easily been the main event, but those two didn’t need the belt to do what they did, much like Austin and The Rock didn’t need it for their grudge match. Sure, either of those could have been for a world title, but both succeeded without it.

It’s not that Kurt Angle and Brock Lesnar needed the WWE Championship to make their story work as both had amazing amateur backgrounds, and you could have built a grudge match based on that. But with their history of winning and the rise of Brock Lesnar in the time leading to WrestleMania XIX, it was just another step, and a title match at WrestleMania was right in line with what they were doing with him.

Lesnar had won the Royal Rumble, and the build for the match with Angle was really fun and the match itself was as well. There was no way these two were going to disappoint. This was when Lesnar was still beatable and not the dominant, sometimes boring force he’s become in the majority of his matches these days. He was a whirlwind of athleticism, and being in there with a guy like Kurt Angle didn’t hurt. They put on a clinic that was so enjoyable to watch. Okay, Lesnar might have gotten a little too overzealous with that Shooting Star Press from WAY too far away, but he was still able to recover and pick up the victory.
