New York Mets getting Michael Conforto back in lineup

NEW YORK, NY - AUGUST 24: Michael Conforto
NEW YORK, NY - AUGUST 24: Michael Conforto

The 2017 New York Mets were battered by injuries last season, and now they will have slugging outfielder Michael Conforto back on Thursday.

In many baseball circles, the Mets are considered a competitive team barring injuries. Those crushed their season last year, and they now look to improve by reaching October once more. New York has a good rotation when healthy, and the club added offense in the form of Jay Bruce and Todd Frazier to boost the lineup’s production.

The Mets received encouraging news on that front on Wednesday, as they learned outfielder Michael Conforto would be activated for Thursday’s game against the Washington Nationals. With that said, the lefty hitter should make his successful return from shoulder surgery. He will definitely enhance this Mets lineup while providing solid outfield defense. Conforto was a key offensive cog last year, when he hit 27 homers in only 440 plate appearances.

New York’s left fielder will face off against righty Stephen Strasburg to start the game. The Mets aren’t going to have an easy time overcoming the Nationals, but tomorrow will be a happy day for Mets fans either way. Furthermore, the club will be getting a major run producer and clubhouse presence. He is one of the key faces of the franchise for years to come. Conforto and Yoenis Cespedes can be one of the best 1-2 punches in the National league.

If everyone can stay healthy, this team could do something special. The Mets will have a difficult time knocking down the Nationals, but their pitching staff can’t be denied. Pair that with constant offense and you’ve got yourself a contender. It’s the Nats’ division to win, but the Mets always have a chance with an undamaged club. With the Conforto activation, the Mets get one of their best hitters back in the lineup.

Ultimately, New York will gain offense with Conforto’s return. He has power to all fields and can make the pitcher work. At 25, he could become the face of the franchise in Queens. The slugger will get his chance on Thursday to continue his success. Conforto overcame his injury, and now he is back for action.  Mets fans, rejoice.
