Julian Edelman helped prevent another horrible tragedy after reporting a school shooting threat left in the comments of one of his Instagram posts.

School shootings have become a common occurrence in 2018. The number of shootings that occurred on school grounds has already eclipsed double digits, and there are no signs of it stopping anytime soon.

Thankfully, an Instagram follower of Edelman’s with a good eye caught the comment and let the New England Patriots’ star receiver know via direct message. Edelman then had his assistant report the comment to the authorities, according to ESPN.

Police traced the comment to a boy in Port Huron, Michigan, who wrote “I’m going to shoot my school up watch the news.” The 14-year-old admitted to posting the comment and police took him into custody. Two rifles, owned by the mother, were also found in the home. The police charged him with making a threat of terrorism.

With how common this issue has become, social media is becoming a place for threats to be left. Luckily, Edelman was made aware of this threat and helped stop the shooting. Whether or not the young man was going to commit a crime of heinous proportions is unknown, but the comment had to be taken seriously and was. Hopefully he gets the help he needs.

Edelman, 31, is hoping to return to the field this season after tearing his ACL in a preseason game last year against the Detroit Lions. The former Kent State quarterback is entering his 10th season with the Patriots, and has 4,540 yards and 24 touchdowns in his career.
