John Cena as a fan in the crowd at WrestleMania was the damndest thing

John Cena was true to his word and was at WrestleMania 34 in the crowd, and it was both glorious and a little weird.

Never let it be said that John Cena is a liar. When he exhausted all of his potential avenues for a match at WrestleMania 34, he said he’d be in the crowd at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome as a fan.

Sure enough, he was. Starting during the Kickoff Show and continuing into the main card itself, the WWE broadcast made sure to cut to Cena numerous times to let everyone watching at home know that, yep, he’s there.

Here’s the thing: Since everyone still expected Undertaker to arrive at some point to finally accept Cena’s challenge for a match, the whole thing was kind of surreal. Like it was winking at the fourth wall without really acknowledging it.

In any case, please enjoy these excellent shots of Cena and decide for yourself how strange the whole thing is:

We have so many questions. Why is Cena stuck in a corner floor section instead of sitting in the front row? Should he be drinking a beer if he might have to go up against the Phenom later in the night? Did he actually go to the merch stand and buy that WrestleMania 34 t-shirt? Will he rush to the barricade in excitement like normal fans? And if the ‘Taker match comes together, will he have to wrestle in jeans?

Actually, we may have received an answer to that last question right after Charlotte Flair ended Asuka’s undefeated streak, as a referee came down and whispered something to Cena, who rushed right to the back.

Still, even if Cena’s time as a fan only lasted an hour, it was a strange but fun way to promote a match or non-match or whatever ends up happening.
