1. The Washington Capitals are deep

The Caps are good at everything. They sit above the league average in almost every desirable category. They don’t stand atop the Metro Division because they do nothing but score goals. The Caps score, defend, block shots, kill penalties and have two starting-caliber goaltenders. They also possess multiple game breakers that can put the puck in the net on a whim.

Backstrom and Ovechkin have proven that they can produce while apart and thus given Barry Trotz more to work with. As their offense has evolved this year, they will more effectively wear down opponents’ defense over long series. Tom Wilson has excelled on the top line, providing strong deterrence for defenders seeking to take liberties with his captain.

11 of Washington’s final 14 regular season games have been victories. The team is firing on all cylinders as the playoffs begin.
