Lucifer returns for the home stretch of season 3 with “The Angel of San Bernardino.” Are angels descending on Los Angeles, or is it Lucifer’s imagination? Here’s your recap.

This week’s episode starts out with a woman waking up in bed to find men fighting in her house. She calls 911, but a winged avenger swoops in and saves her before she is shot.

Pierce welcomes Chloe to the evidence closet, where he kisses her and knocks stuff off of Ella’s walls in the next room.

Lucifer shows up at the next crime scene as Chloe and Pierce arrive and he laments being alone that morning. She promises that Pierce won’t get in their way, but Lucifer spots “DNA” on her shirt from the closet. Ella greets her with the victim. Kevin Winstead is the dead guy, a member of a wealthy real estate family. He rented a room there and was a heroin addict. His arms suggest he has been clean for a while. The murderer was interrupted by the home’s owner, who heard the murderer call the victim by his name. She also claims that God sent an angel to save her. Lucifer laughs. She says the angel stole her Gabriel statue from her angel collection. Chloe laughs that it could have been one of Lucifer’s brothers, but Pierce asks if that could seriously be true.

Lucifer gets a call from Amenadiel and heads back to his apartment, where Amenadiel says that they might have made a mistake showing Charlotte proof of their divinity. Lucifer doesn’t care what she does. He asks Amenadiel if any of their siblings were in town, but then Lucifer kicks over the missing statue, which is on his bedroom floor.

Later, Lucifer shows the figurine to Linda and can’t remember what he’s doing with it. She recalls that he’s been having weird dreams, and she wonders that he might be sleepwalking, or sleep-flying, instead of dealing with problems like Chloe and Pierce. Lucifer doesn’t like them together, but he’s not obsessed with them.

Pierce and Chloe cuddle, but then Chloe realizes that Trixie is about to come home. She doesn’t want to introduce him to Trixie until she’s sure, but he says he’s all in. Chloe gets a call from Lucifer and has to take it. She gets back to the station and Lucifer says they need to find the killer. He will use that to prove the angel wasn’t him, which Chloe thinks they can confirm right away. They decide to go talk to the head of the rehab facility.

Lucifer can’t believe how nice the rehab facility is. The other guy in treatment, a producer, says he didn’t kill Kevin, but Lucifer doesn’t believe him. He attacks him and wants to know if the angel looked like him, but it turns out the man is a sex addict and was with someone. Chloe tells Lucifer to take the afternoon off so he can calm down. She tells him to go home. He agrees, but borrows her handcuffs.

That night Lucifer locks himself to the bed. When he wakes up, Amenadiel is there with a newspaper that says the Angel of San Bernardino saved a family from the fire. The handcuffs are broken and Lucifer is covered in soot. Looks like he’s the angel in question. Lucifer reads the report that says the savior had wings. Amenadiel thinks this is all his fault, because he told Lucifer to show his divinity to Charlotte and now they’re being punished. Lucifer sees it as manipulation. He needs proof that it was him.

Pierce makes a date with someone when Ella comes in, and she’s happy things are going so well. Ella knows he’s holding back, and she asks if Chloe has been holding back on the three little words. She says Chloe will say them eventually, and everything will change. “I’m counting on it,” Pierce says.

Charlotte is back to her old insulting ways. She can’t insult Ella, though, because she likes her. She grabs Dan and takes him away.

Chloe meets with Kevin’s ex, and they have a child together. She says Kevin liked the drugs more than her, and he called every now and then for drug money. Her husband says he once owed a lot of money to someone but isn’t sure who it is.

Charlotte and Dan get drunk over lunch, and she gives him a list of all of the stuff she has done. She feels liberated now. She thinks she can put in a good word for him with God. She tells him to go to the closet and get naked, and she’ll meet him there. But when he gets naked, someone else comes in and finds him posing nude.

Lucifer is upset that they can’t find the drug dealer. Chloe sends him away but he says he will go out when he falls asleep, so she suggests that he not sleep. We see him doing all sorts of things to stay away, including drugs and a fight club. He sees an old episode of Bones and is hooked.

Chloe is on the phone with Maze, and she gives Chloe the same response about getting back on the right track as Pierce said to her. But they want to try. Lucifer shows up after not sleeping for days, binging all 12 seasons of Bones. He looks awful. She shows him a video of Kevin buying drugs, and they think they might catch him in the act at a hotel.

There’s a wedding going on, and Lucifer sees a man and swears that he’s the killer. The guy is actually an actor, not a heart surgeon, so he hired a guy to look like he knows fancy people. He explains that he fought with Kevin at the park because he was hired to be Kevin’s friend. He got the job through an agency.

Pierce gets home and finds Maze there already. She’s ready to kill him, but she says that it’s harsh that he’s going to hurt Chloe so much if he disappears on her without saying a word. That’s harsh, even by demon standards.

Chloe and Lucifer read up on the company, and she says she won’t be able to get a warrant until the next day, but Lucifer roars that he can’t sleep until they find the murderer. She takes Lucifer into the interrogation room and he admits that seeing her with Pierce is making him crazy. He says that she can’t trust Pierce because he’s Cain, but Chloe says that Pierce treats her right and makes her happy. She starts to say she loves him but stops and walks out.

Charlotte tries on a diamond necklace. Amenadiel shows up and says Dan called him and is worried about her. She says she’s doing better than ever. She doesn’t worry about anything anymore because she has a pair of angels working for her. Amenadiel says that the only thing that matters is who she is, because they can’t get her into heaven. She relapsed into her old ways, and now she can’t change. She knows she’s going to hell.

Trixie studies the website and says she could order a new mom. She knows how to do her signature. She spots Pierce in the office and decides to tell Trixie about him. She wants to know if Trixie is ok with that, and she asks if he likes chocolate cake. They decide to ask him. As they leave, she spots Kevin’s ex’s husband on the website.

Later, Lucifer shows up in Jeremy’s apartment and asks if he’s having trouble sleeping. Lucifer knows that they aren’t his real family. He was hired by his wife to play a role, and he admits that he got her to fall in love with him and he killed Kevin to protect the family. Lucifer wants to know if he saw Lucifer that night, but Jeremy claims the angel was a projection.

Chloe shows up, and she finds him in his house. He confesses to everything.

Lucifer is tearing apart his apartment when Maze shows up. He’s looking for the angel because he knows that Pierce is trying to set him up. Chloe needs proof and that’s what he will do. He finds the figurine and she tells him to take it to Ella. Lucifer realizes that she’s being too nice, so she must be helping Pierce. She planted the figurine. She planted the evidence and staged it all. Maze says she tapped into the daddy issues to upset him, and he thinks she’s stalling him.

Pierce shows up with beer and chocolate cake and she says he can stay. She’s done trying to hide their relationship. She’s so happy, and she can finally admit that she likes spending time with him. He stops her from saying she loves him. He says she’s making it too hard, and this isn’t worth it. He leaves, and later he flips out.

Lucifer arrives at her house and Trixie answers. She looks sad, but Chloe is there and she looks awful. Heartbroken. Lucifer storms out and goes to Pierce’s house. He attacks him and demands to know why he hurt Chloe. Pierce admits that he could have been free if she said the words but he couldn’t hurt her like that. Pierce allows Lucifer to beat him up, and then he sees that the mark is gone.
