The Boston Bruins host the Toronto Maple Leafs in Game 5 of their first-round series. Here’s everything you need to know to watch.

On Thursday night, the Toronto Maple Leafs had a chance to put the Boston Bruins in a tricky position. Following a 4-2 win on home ice, a victory for the Buds would have tied up the series and shifted the momentum in their favor prior to heading into Boston. That the Bruins would have to do without Selke finalist Patrice Bergeron further amplified talk of redemptive possibilities, as the boys in blue and white looked to silence doubters.

Rather than capitalizing on an opportunity for the ages, the Leafs fell short of a much needed win. Tuukka Rask’s best performance of the playoffs thus far was the central avenue through which the Bruins emerged with a 3-1 victory. Stellar play from the likes of Brad Marchand, Jake DeBrusk, Riley Nash, David Pastrnak and Danton Heinen allowed the Bruins to make the most of their scoring chances while also neutralizing the Leafs’ speed.

As both teams head into Game 5, the ball appears to be in Boston’s court. Despite hoping for Bergeron’s return, the Bruins have proven time and time again that they can perform without their top center. The team’s 3-1 series lead attests to this fact. With or without him, expect massive two-way presence from the Bruins’ core. A win on home ice would be an epic finale, as the group looks to usher forward yet another statement victory.

For Toronto, it’s do-or-die time. The return of Nazem Kadri, coupled with Tomas Plekanec’s increasingly stellar play are silver linings for a fanbase in a state of relative despair. That said, defensive shortcomings and missed opportunities have been among the more problematic stories of the Leafs’ series. As such, fans will not only expect Toronto’s blue line to muster up an accountable game, but shall also hope that the team’s young stars — especially Auston Matthews and William Nylander — manage to establish some sense of command in the offensive end.
