Yankees top prospect Gleyber Torres had a spring training to forget, but now he’s getting his chance in the Big Apple.

Gleyber Torres had a pretty awful spring training. He finished with a slash line of .219/.286/.313, so it was definitely one to forget. Combine that with the depth the Yankees have on the infield, and it prompted the team to start Torres in Triple-A to open the season.

After going hitless in his first minor league game of the season, he’s been on a tear the rest of the way. Right now he’s hitting .370/.415/.543, and has earned a call up to the big leagues.

With the way Miguel Andujar is playing right now it seems, the third base job is his to lose, so that puts Torres in position to try and win the second base job. Tyler Wade and Niel Walker are currently playing second, and in their last 94 at-bats they’ve combined for just four extra-base hits and seven RBIs. It’s definitely time for Torres.

The Yankees have their rubber match with the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday against former Yankee Jaime Garcia. Torres is expected to be in the lineup for that game.

We knew this was coming sooner or later. Andujar and Torres are the future of their respective positions. With Brandon Drury still recovering from his migraine issues and the struggles of the Yankees’ second basemen, this is a perfect time to bring him up.

Walker was brought in as an insurance policy because of his versatility, but statistically he’s been among the leagues worst in OPS. Wade, who won the second base job out of spring training, is hitting an abysmal .086 and is three for his last 35 at the plate.

Hopefully the addition of Torres to the lineup can provide a boost to the club with his bat, and provide some more RBI opportunities to the teams big bats.
