Cubs fans got a big scare when they saw Kris Bryant hit in the head with a pitch and left the game in the first inning vs. the Rockies.

So much for a lazy, relaxing Sunday.

Cubs fans had to hold their breath after a scary scene in the first inning of today’s game vs. the Rockie. Kris Bryant stepped into the box for his first at bat of the game. The former NL MVP took a 96 MPH fastball to the brim of his helmet and left the game.

Cubs fans had every reason to be concerned. I jumped out of my seat and said at least a few swear words immediately when I was watching. I just kept hoping Bryant would be okay, and that he wouldn’t be too adversely affected by such a frightening scene.

It’s one of my biggest fears watching baseball because we’ve seen how quickly seasons and careers can change in a flash with a baseball coming screaming at one’s head.

Thankfully, it looks like Bryant avoided the worst of it.

According to ESPN Cubs reporter Jesse Rogers, Bryant didn’t exhibit any concussion symptoms and only had a small cut above his eye from his sunglasses.

That gust of wind was a huge sigh of relief coming from Cubs fans. Knowing he didn’t display any concussion symptoms is the most telling and most concerning after he was hit. There is no fixed timetable for players to recover from concussions. Sometimes they’ll take a week or so to fully recover. Sometimes it’s much longer and post-concussion syndrome can last for a long time with seemingly no end in sight.

Thankfully, it sounds like Bryant will be okay, and could be back in the lineup for the Cubs next game on Tuesday night in Cleveland.
