2018 NBA Mock Draft: Where do Doncic, Ayton and Bagley land?

We don’t know what will happen for Washington in the first round this year, with their series tied at 2 games each as of this writing, but the Wizards have some decisions to make this summer regardless. Porter can be part of a new solution to some of the Wizards’ biggest problems, even aside from being cheap as a first-round pick.

In two seasons, John Wall’s “super max” extension will kick in, meaning $37.8 million is headed his way and out of Washington’s salary cap treasure chest. Cheaper players young and old, such as Kelly Oubre and Mike Scott, will become more important for Washington as Wall becomes more expensive.

Elsewhere on the roster, center Marcin Gortat has begun to discuss the twilight of his career openly. He told reporters in January, ““I’m going to be a old guy, so I don’t know if Orlando would be interested or not. But I would love to join the team back again just to wear the uniform, put the white and blue stripes again on me and be able to say I’m a Magic again and just come back home where I belong.” With one season left on his contract, next season could be his last, and it might make sense for the Wizards to explore trades, with Orlando or elsewhere, for their own sake.

Porter could be an answer for the open spot on the roster created by Gortat’s departure, this season or next. Forward Markieff Morris is a free agent after next season as well. Decision time is coming for this annually underwhelming squad, which always seems to perform worse in the regular season than their talent would suggest.
