Liverpool moved closer to the Champions League final on Tuesday, defeating Roma 5-2. On Saturday, the Reds host Stoke at Anfield. With three games remaining, Stoke need to win out if they are going to remain in the Premier League next season.
Liverpool are third in the Premier League and are unlikely to fall out of the top. With their position in the table secured, Liverpool have turned their attention to the Champions League. While the Reds did win 5-2, they conceded two late away goals to give Roma life. With the second leg Wednesday in Rome, Jurgen Klopp will likely consider resting some of his key starters after losing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for the rest of the season. After scoring last weekend, Danny Ings could again start for Roberto Firmino, who scored twice in the first leg.
Stoke drew 1-1 with Burnley last weekend, extending their winless drought to 12 games. Over that stretch, the Potters have six points. Had Stoke won any of those six games instead of settling for a draw, they might not be looking at relegation. Defensively, Stoke have been a mess all season long, allowing the most goals in the Premier League. Offensively, the Potters have scored 32 goals, the fourth fewest. Xherdan Shaqiri leads the club with seven goals and six assists this season. The Swiss playmaker will have to play well over the final three games if the Potters are going to survive.
