The Miami Dolphins selected tight end Mike Gesicki in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Here’s all you need to know about Gesicki, including our grade.

Strengths

Aside from just simply being a very large human being, Gesicki can put that Fram to use in jump ball situations. He can “Randy Moss” defenders, meaning he can flat out go get the ball. He can get vertical in a hurry due to his speed (4.5 40-yard dash) and his athletic ability. in today’s NFL where he can’t get touched after the five yards from scrimmage, he can be a massive advantage in the second and third level of the defense.

He’s to big for anyone in the secondary and he’s faster than most linebackers. His wingspan and leaping ability mean a quarterback just has to get the ball near him. He’s not scared to run the deep routes and the danger of the big hit that comes with it. He could be a legitimate deep and red zone threat in the NFL.

Weaknesses

One thing that everyone agrees Gesicki cannot do is any type of blocking. He can’t be lined up on the end of the line and help in the run game or help against edge rushers in the pass game. Tight ends with his athleticism can get around that weakness but it could limit his playing time early. For his size, he doesn’t always play up to it. He’s knocked off his routes too easily for being a mountain of a man.

He’ll need to become more physical to take full advantage of his gifts. There’s also questions about his intermediate to short field ability. Gesicki needs to work on the routes closer to the line of scrimmage to expand his game to a more well-rounded threat.
