The Carolina Panthers added an elite wide receiver in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft, selecting D.J. Moore from Maryland. It is the second year in a row that the Panthers have gone offense in the first round, as they look to put more weapons around star quarterback Cam Newton. Last year, the team drafted running back Christian McCaffrey, who will get the bulk of the carries in 2018 with Jonathan Stewart gone.

In 2019, the Panthers should look to buck their recent trend and draft a defensive player. One area that is eventually going to be a need is middle linebacker, as star Luke Kuechly cannot play forever. With their first round pick in 2019, the Panthers should draft one of the top middle linebackers in the draft class, and that would be Devin White from LSU.

White is a sideline-to-sideline guy, and we saw how much teams covet those types of players during the 2018 NFL Draft. This Panthers team made it back to the playoffs last season, and while they could do so again in 2018, they could take a step backwards. Having White work with Kuechly early in his career would only help him down the line, where he would take over as the main man in the middle of the defense.
