Real Madrid return to Spain holding a 2-1 lead over Bayern Munich. The German champions got off to a good start against Real Madrid, scoring first but could not hold onto the lead. Real Madrid are 90 minutes away from advancing to their third straight Champions League final.
Zinedine Zidane’s side capitalized on Bayern’s mistakes in the first leg. Marcelo tied the game before halftime, volleying a poor clearance into the corner of the net. Marco Asensio scored the winning goal for Madrid. Rafinha slipped giving the ball away, allowing Asensio and Lucas Vazquez to have a two on one attack with Asensio finishing. Real Madrid defeated Leganes 2-1 over the weekend, with Zidane rotating most of his squad. Dani Carvajal and Isco are both expected to miss the second leg after picking up injuries in the first leg. Asensio will likely start in place of Isco. However, replacing Carvajal will be more difficult.
Injuries have become the storyline for Bayern as the season reaches its finale. Arjen Robben was forced off after five minutes and could miss the second leg. Jerome Boateng was injured in the first half and will miss the rest of the season. Already without Manuel Neuer, Arturo Vidal and Kingsley Coman, Bayern’s depth is being tested. Thiago and Niklas Sule were brought on for Robben and Boateng and will likely start in the second leg. The good news for Bayern could be the return of David Alaba. The Austrian full-back has battled a back injury but traveled to Madrid with the team.
Franck Ribery had a very good first leg but could not buy a goal despite creating multiple chances inside of the box. Bayern need Robert Lewandowski to score if they are going to win. In the five games, Bayern have lost this season, Lewandowski has failed to score in any of them. The German champions will need to score at least two goals if they are going to advance to the Champions League final for the first time since 2013.
